Bloc Party @ the fillmore 6.1.05
Wow. what a great 2 weeks of shows. i wasn't expecting too much of the bloc party show last night although i think 'silent alarm' as well as most of their ep's are great works of pop. catchy melodic songwriting i haven't heard since the stone roses and early new order. they sounded thin on most of the live recordings i've heard and they did start out that way. sort of like having the pa equipment for an intimate club show, but you're playing a venue 3x the size. the show did get better with each song. everything sounded great after a few songs into the show. the band worked great off of each other with the drummer showing major skills beyond rock, and kele's voice held out throughout the show. i haven't seen such a dynamic rawk show since radiohood. hipsters, please stay away. gap xmas commercial, please stay away. madonna, please stay away.
speaking of the incredible year of shows...........
4/2 fri - Handsome Boy Modeling School/Buck 65 @ the warfield - bummer. dan the automator and price paul basically stood around while a person pretending to play the bass also stood around. press play on your cd player........ buck 65 was pretty good. interesting country rapper/dj.
4/27 wed - Nine Inch Nails @ the warfield - great energy. trent puts on a great show. angst ridden-real? who knows, but good nonetheless.
4/28 thur - M83/Ulrich Schnauss @bimbos - ulrich makes incredible music and although he played his computer and i believe a keyboard. as with most laptop based music played in a live environment, it could have had more energy. m83 had a band, but after about 3 songs i left. i still don't get them. i'll try a few more times.
4/30 sat - Miss Kittin @mezzanine - wow. one of the top dj's i have ever seen. electro, breaks, techno. she makes it all work making it funky. if i ever threw a big party, she would be spinning. dance your ass ass off off.
5/4 wed - Andrea Parker @ club 6 - she makes interesting breaky dubby music and live the bass felt like i was in miami or maybe just stuck in a big 808 machine. pretty good as a dj. more interesting as a producer.
5/14 sat - M.I.A. / LCD Soundsystem @ the fillmore - mia opens up with diplo on the decks. has an extra singer. everything sounded like it was from the cd. it sounded good and thumpin and the crowd was definitely into it. another heavy bass show. lcd was good with a full band, but after the energy of mia, it was just too hard to top.
5/14 sat -Sutekh / Kid Kameleon / Eats Tapes @ werepad - this was right after the mia/lcd show. weird space, kid kameleon played some interesting stuff, sutekh sounded good, but eats tapes had all of the energy. i heard them once before at hush hush and they didn;t sound this good. gotta check out sutekh again.
5/19 thur - Prefuse73/ Battles/ Beans @ great american music hall - wow.beans comes out throwin it accapella. the best MC out there right now. not much appreciation from the crowd. fuckin hipster no nuthins. battles came on and with the drummer setup right in the middle of the stage and his crash symbol about 3 feet higher than the rest of his kit, they played some interesting abstract stuff. the drummer was from helmet and you could tell by how hard he played. prefuse rawked it. with most of his stuff being abstract melodic hip-hop stuff, i thought it would be hard to replicate it in a live environment, but he made it more fourfour and it was funky and good. people were actually dancing at a rawk venue. wow.
5/20 fri - Autechre @mezzanine - i dont think i;ve heard bass and beats like that before in a live setting. i think it was partly them and the incredible soundsystem at mezz. i was wondering why they chose to play that venue, but the sound was awe inspiring. i wanted to leave and make music, but i also needed to stay and hear what came next. it was all about the sound. no strobes, no disco ball. everything including the 2 guys was dimly lit. on another level....
5/25 wed - Caribou aka manitoba / Junior Boys @ Bottom of the Hill - i caught the end of the jb set and they played "birthday" which was good enough for me. too candy pop for me. i was at b.o.t.h. for velvet teen and it sounded like shit. i've heard that the sound guys sucks there, so low expectations, but caribou with a guitarist and 2 drummers blew it up. great mix of his new classic pop sound to his more interesting abstract beat stuff.
6/1 wed - Bloc Party @ the fillmore - see above
