Sam Beam has been doing the solo-guitar-introspective-singer songwriter-fare for a few years now, but on this ode to womanhood, he breaks out different instrumentation and his songwriting is better for it. The songs are more well-formed as in the title track. Maybe it was last year, but he wrote probably one of the best songs ever in 'The Trapeze Swinger' which was featured on the 'In Good Company' soundtrack. This year's Calexico combined release as well as the show at the Warfield where Mark Kozelek came out and sang was a definite highlight.
