best shows (in no particular order)
1. squeeze - meriweather post pavilion, columbia md 1988 first show where the whole crowd got into it. they made everyone jump to the left, right, etc.. this is where i realized it was called a "show"
2. the brand new heavies - trocadero, philly 1995 funky as hell. with the mullins and jenn. got on the small balcony and danced away. we were about 5 feet from the band.
3. the stone roses - webster hall, nyc & trocadero, philly 2 of the 9 shows in the USA
4. archers of loaf - khyber pass, philly - gave the bassist a bass string that was left on the pa. he thanked me and had the audience thank me. and he was the one who left it there. indie rock gods.
5. jeff buckley - tin angel. philly a week after grace came out. brought my girlfriend at the time who just flew in that afternoon from a month long trip in europe. needless to say she didnt want to go, she and i were blown away. she as i are life long fans now.
6. new order - 1987 meriweather w. sugarcubes and echo and bunny men.
7. richie hawtin - decibel, sf 1992. wow, techno. funky, deep. amazing experience. innovator, genius.
8 . ben harper - solo acoustic bimbos, sf 1991 radio show only. did 'sexual healing' from marvin gaye. quite a treat.
9. radiohead - radio city music hall, nyc 1997
10. paul westerberg/grant lee buffalo - chestnut cabaret, philly 1992 no more mats, but i got to see westerberg play some old tunes and discovered GLB. acoustic instruments jacked up to create this hard, but beautiful sound.
11. big audio dynamite 2 - chestnut cabaret, 1992 singing with the band for the encore with shant whose fav artists are the clash and prince. well, got to sing with mick jones 1999 - a prince song. pretty fukin cool
12. the arcade fire - warfield, sf 2005 - performance art. incredible show. lead singer continues show outside.
13 . a perfect circle, warfield sf 2003 - demonic show, sitting in the last row. lights go on signaling the end of the show and 'the tourist' (one of my all time favorites) from radiohead goes on. to hear it on their soundsystem--amazing. similar to when seeing u2 at giants stadium just after jeff buckley had died, the song that went on after the show was 'hallelujah' from buckley. those experiences and times you'll always remember.....
14. the afghan whigs - tla, philly 1997 soul music . my boss at the time and my girlfriend at the time fell in love with dulli.
15. mark eitzel/bob mould, trocadero , philly 1998 eitzel solo @ 5 spot, philly sad, but true.
16. beans/battles/prefuse 73 - gamh, sf 2005 beans rules and prefuse puts on a great show
17. autechre, mezzanine, sf 2005. the sound was just right. full and bassy and evil.
18. bjork - paramount theater, oakland 2003 it was like being at the theater. there were set times everywhere including the bathroom. played with the Sj orchestra and the icelandic singers. powerful. genius.
19. tibetan freedom concert, amsterdam 1999 - thom yorke/johnny greenwood, before kid a came out. wow.
20. soul coughing - khyber pass, philly funky as shit. the upright bass with the awesome drummer
21. dan bell, springarden bar, philly 2002 made everyone dance in this small little bar. brought 4 peeps who had no idea. converted afterwards.
22. crowded house - tower theater, philly 1995 one of the best pop groups since the beatles. a real show. everyone kept changing instruments. comic as well.
23. joe jackson - tower theater, philly 1993 - one of the great artists of our time. a live direct to 2 track album, a r&b album, a big band album, a world album, an instrumental album. why is elvis costello getting all the credit ?
24 . telefon tel aviv/matthew dear - remix @W hotel, sf 2004. fuked up sounds from TTA, but beautiful. MD rawked it out. subs galore.
25. joseph arthur - cafe du nord, sf 2003. sampling his voice, the guitar body and about 4 other elements and creating a wall of sound. incredible.
26 . ned's atomic festival - hfestival , md 1994 2 bassists. 105 degrees. no more festivals.
27. the pixies, coachella indo,ca 2004 - now i know how they influenced most of the rock music in the 90's
28. prince @ the fillmore,sf 2005 on valentine's day. felt like i was in vegas.
29. stewart walker @ rx gallery, sf 2004 - minimal and live
30. sunny day real estate - slim's, sf 2001 enigk's voice soaring.
31. caribou -bottom of the hill, sf 2005 2 drummers
32. bloc party - bottom of the hill, sf 2005 - soundcheck, no singer
33. stanley turrentine - yoshi's oakland,ca 2002 - a week before he died and we saw him before the show outside smoking and coughing up a storm.
