"Fly, fly, the devil's in your eye, shoot shoot"

Twin Peaks, 2008 (Click on image to see better quality)

The Liars played Slims last night to kick off their tour in rain soaked San Francisco. With an apparent back injury that had the singer, Angus sit for most of the show, the audience was treated to what the demonic afterworld might sound like if it was controlled by the Liars. They brought this pounding rhythmic groove that was part Berlin Techno, part John Bonham, and part Funk Brothers. It reminded of seeing a DJ, or live electronic act where audience participation in the form of dancing is a necessary part of the show, but seeing that this was a hipster no-dance party, an irony filled head nod was all the band was going to get. Go check out the band on tour. Highlights from the almost one and a half hour ritual are below, although they are the album tracks and not the ones from last night. They are one of the best musical artists out there right now and their show only highlighted this fact. Drum's Not Dead is one of the best albums to be released, ever. There's nothing else like it, trust me.

These two tracks were the highlights of the show last night:

Liars - We Fenced Other Gardens With The Bones Of Our Own (Rock) - this track is the single version as the one on They Were Wrong So We Drowned is called We Fenced Other Houses...... the album was co-produced by Sitek from TV On The Radio and was a preview of the masterpiece ahead. the title of this post is from this track.

Liars - The Other Side Of Mt Heart Attack - the most straight forward track on Drum's Not Dead and also one of the best. Simple lyrics explaining something complex.

The Blood Brothers - Set Fire To The Face On Fire (Hard Rock) - these guys are no more, but they toured with the liars a few years back and have this intense energy that reminds me of at the drive-in.

Beans - Thundermouth (Hip Hop) - he's back and it's not on Warp Records ? from the mc who uses a verbal machine gun to deliver his message. not everything will hit it's target, but something will hit the target. this track was produced by Dabrye. i guess Anti-Pop Consortium is back together. nice.

Botaxabust - Rare Sighting

A Rare Shot of The Mill Valley Cougar Bug, Botaxabust, 2007

i just purchased the glenn gould - original jacket collection which is basically 80 albums of gould recordings. the piano has always been my favorite instrument and gould's playing, especially of bach, as well as his eccentric life which was incredibly portrayed in the movie, '32 short films about glenn gould' made him a constant figure in my somewhat erratic, in terms of taste, listening habits. 80 discs seems a bit overwhelming. i guess this blog will become a classical site for awhile.

Iron & Wine - Flightless Bird, American Mouth (Singer Songwriter) - sam beam always paints a great picture with his lyrics and this song has the melody to match the words. "cursing my sore blunt tongue"

Boxcutter - Windfall (Dubstep) - barry lynn from ireland released his second full length player with more bass-filled goodies. one of the unique players in what is now becoming an overcrowded genre.

Liars - Pure Unevil (Rock) - bizarre, noisy, repetitive, and what you try to avoid when you are walking on a busy sidewalk.

A Good Base

Miles Davis - It Never Entered My Mind (Live Pasadena Civic Center, 1956) - just picked up the legacy edition of ''round midnight' and it has a bonus disc of a live set from miles and his first great mega group which consisted of a then unknown john coltrane, red garland, paul chambers and philly joe jones.

Liars- Sailing To Byzantium (Alternative Rock) - although this self titled release does not top their previous release, 'drums not dead', it's hard to top perfection. this offering shows the liars in more of a gazing rock stance with a jesus & mary chain like sustain on everything.
